Spring 2005

Two-Dimensional Design at North Georgia was not only an exploration of the Elements and Principles of Design, but a study of various media as well. We discussed value and line through various types of drawing pencils and inks, abstracted magazine ads into new compositions with paint, worked with photograms, collage, linoleum cuts, and some fabric. The last assignment became a small body of work dealing with themes of the student's own choosing, some working with formal studies of compositions, others tackling translating music into a visual medium.

Photo I covers technical concerns of making a good negative and a good print, but also with using camera controls to create dynamic compositions. Exercises with aperture, shutter speed, and point of view are stressed early on. The Photographer's Sampler includes various types of portraiture and land/cityscape images. A series project includes at least five photos that relate either by concept, process or aesthetic. The class ends with a final portfolio of ten matted images.
